ocd and wcd files

Hi, apologies if this has been asked before.

I have been sent an ocd file which gives an unexpected file type error if I try to open it in Condes 8.1.11. If I just try to open an event, Condes looks for a wcd files and indeed a course I planned last year is saved in this format. My understanding of the website is that Condes should read and export ocd files so I am confused.

The person sending this file says he always has this problem when sending a file to someone so is it simply that the files are getting corrupted at his end?

Hi Malcolm,

This subject often confuses, so no need to apologise.

A .wcd file is the Condes "native" event file format, in which Condes stores data, including control locations and course compositions.

An .ocd file is the OCAD "native" map file format, in which OCAD stores the map.

A Condes event file links to one or more map files.

In Condes, you don't open a map file as such. Instead, you need first create an event file. Use the File / New Event File menu option. Let the wizard guide you through setting up the event, including linking your event to a map file.

I hope this helps you in the right direction.

Best regards,
Finn

Thanks Finn, I understand much better now.
Sorry, but I dont understand better. I know that wcd is a condes file and ocd is o ocd file. Ocd files can though be maps OR course planning files. In section FILE there is a possibility to bring ocd course planning file. I have used OCAD8 and I'm going to have a big competition after few weeks and I have understood that condes has several good qualities and I'd like to try it.. but Condes says that my OCAD8 course planning file isnt a that kind of ocad course planning file than it should be even there s nothing wrong with the file on my opinion...

Hi Janne

You are absolutely right.

Condes now supports importing OCAD course planning files -- it didn't when the above message was posted.

Condes supports course planning files from OCAD version 9 or newer. However, this is not mentioned in the help file, nor is it mentioned in the error message, when you try to import an OCAD8 course file. This is not good enough, and I'll make sure that the next maintenance release will have a better error message, and that the on-line help system mentions this.

As for the possibility of adding support for importing OCAD 8 course planning files, unfortunately, I need to prioritize this among all the other implementation tasks that are on the to-do list.

Best regards,
Finn
