Beta V8 and Score Control Numbers

Posted by Dave
Hi Finn,

V8 is looking great!

If I set a course to Score-O and set the number format to number and points I get the points listed twice. There doesn't seem any way with Score-O to get a sequential numbering of the controls?

Also if this option should work with a ScoreO then shouldn't the control descriptions have the same options. It appears that the control description columns go points and control code and there is no way to put a sequential control number there.

Did I miss something in the setup that I need to be doing?

Thanks

Dave

Hi Dave,

Glad you like version 8 :-)

If you set the number format to "number only" or "number and points", then you get a sequential numbering of the control circles -- for the latter you also get the points in parantheses.

If you can reproduce the situation with points being repeated, could you send me a copy of the Condes event file, so that I can take a look at it?

You're right that the control descriptions are always points and codes, no sequential numbers. There is no room for sequential numbers also - I recognise that the design is not consistent at this point.

I guess the "number" option for the control circles really only makes sense when using a conventional punch card, with boxes numbered in sequence, so that you can use the numbers to indicate where to punch. With electronic punching, there is no need for the sequential number, is there?

Let me know your thoughts about this.

regards,
Finn
Hi Finn,

See attached file. ScoreO course with format set to number & points. Map shows points (points). I don't think you need the base map but if you do let me know and I'll send.

Related issue is the order controls show on the control descriptions - they seem to be in a random order - they are not in the same order as they were added to the course. I couldn't see any options on how to change this.

I relaize that there are probably many ways people do score events. I think that showing the sequential contols number with point afterwards is the correct way for the map and then control descriptions show sequential number and control code.

You are right that for conventional pin punching you need a sequential number but for electronic punching it could be omitted. I guess for consistency it should be there for both.

I think that the less deifferences there are for the maps/descriptions between different event types then the less confusion for competitors and organizers alike. The only difference between a scoreO and convential course is that the competetitor needs the point value and this is best shown on the map so they have all the info on the map to make their route choice. The control descriptions are only used when they are in the control area to assist in locating the control.

Using a sequential number as the link between the map and control descriptions is easier for the competitor as well - When planning the route it is easier to remember a few numbers that are all less than 32 as opposed to remebering some control code numbers that could be 3 digits.

I don't know if there is a standard for ScoreO maps and control descriptions but if so it would be interesting to see what they say.

Regards

Dave
